Curriculum decisions are one of the most powerful tools for closing equity gaps and improving student outcomes.

K-12 district leaders are increasingly focused on providing high-quality learning experiences. Selecting high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) that are aligned to grade-level standards and meet diverse student needs is a step towards achieving this goal.

Nationwide, we see a growing trend toward adopting math HQIM in elementary and middle school.
This offers a critical opportunity to close equity gaps by ensuring historically underserved students have access to the materials they need to succeed.

Figure 5 from K-8 Math Quality YOY report showing a bar chart titled, "High-Quality Core Curricula Most Commonly Selected by Districts for Elementary School Math, 2023-24" by series and percent of districts.

Key Findings:

  • Elementary and Middle School Math: 47% of districts selected a high-quality,
aligned core curriculum for K–5, and 42% did so for grades 6–8.
  • Rising HQIM Adoption: The selection of high-quality, aligned math curricula is increasing, with notable growth in the use of several curricula nationwide.
  • Curriculum Evolution: As districts make new math materials selections, older, unaligned editions are increasingly replaced by high-quality options that meet the needs of today’s math classrooms.
