Summary

Achieving instructional coherence—ensuring curriculum, resources, and teaching practices align to support student learning—is a complex, ongoing effort. While many assume that supplemental materials naturally support core instruction, CEMD data show that most are not directly tied to a core curriculum, requiring intentional planning. Additionally, frequent updates to digital supplemental products make maintaining alignment even more challenging.

Key Learnings:

  • Supplemental Materials Are Constantly Evolving: 80% of selected supplemental math products lack a copyright date, making it difficult for districts to track updates and ensure alignment over time.
  • Coherence Depends on Intentional Planning: Most districts select core and supplemental materials from different providers, requiring district-led efforts to align resources and maintain a consistent instructional approach.
  • A Fragmented Market Creates Unique Challenges: With over 350 supplemental products in use across K–8, coherence is not a one-size-fits-all solution—districts must assess and strategically integrate materials to support student learning.
